Star Trek reboot fic recs

Given that LJ was still the dominant platform for fandom when Star Trek was released in 2009 and my recs reflect the time period in which I was most engaged in Trek fandom, the majority of the links here are to authors’ personal LJs or LJ fic archives. I like the idea of readers new to the ST:AOS fandom experiencing the stories in the same way we did at its height—every new fic link drops you not only into a new story but also the multicolored world of the author, complete with tags and icons as previews of her personality and streams of comments where in-jokes evolved, fanon was established, and new works were inspired, or sometimes even created. I hunted up AO3 links for authors whose LJs have been made private or deleted but, sadly, I encountered several whose works have been scrubbed from the internet entirely. I imagine that’s a pattern that will continue, so if you’re here and you find a link that no longer leads you to a story, do let me know. Recs include Kirk/McCoy, Kirk/Spock, and a handful of miscellaneous gen and OT3 fics.

$19.95 Soulmate by ennyousai (21st century AU, R)
Summary: In which Jim orders a mail order partner and gets Bones. Needless to say, things get off to a rough start.

All the Past We Leave Behind by northatlantic (Wild West AU, NC-17)
Summary: Drifter Jim Kirk finds a new purpose in a town called Enterprise and an angry ex-Confederate surgeon he meets there.
Notes: Pike’s sheriff, Kirk’s deputy, McCoy’s the doctor. Purdy darn good.

Asymmetry by canistakahari (R)
Summary: Leonard McCoy has already been through the dorm room politics, the awkward drunken nights, the pain and fear and grief; he didn’t expect to have to start his life over again, but Jim Kirk is making sure he does it right this time.
Notes: Hilarious and eventually sweet, plus T.S Eliot.

Bad Moon Rising by pforte (werewolf AU, NC-17)
Summary: Jim hadn’t known and he most definitely hadn’t suspected. Now that he thought of it, there had been signs. Lots of them. But hindsight is twenty-twenty and, honestly, how could he have guessed this? His best friend of two years, a fucking fairy tale monster!

Cura Te Ipsum by lindmere (NC-17)
Summary: McCoy has a touch of something that’s going around the ship; Kirk is happy to provide him with a cure.
Notes: Also read its sequels in the Passing Through series on AO3.

Fade by canistakahari (FBI agent AU, NC-17)
Summary: McCoy’s been an agent for a long time, and a young, cocky, obnoxious new partner is exactly what he doesn’t need, dammit.
Notes: Pike’s the AD. Also, Pike drives a soccer-mom minivan.

How We Fight by eonism (NC-17)
Summary: Jim doesn’t sleep the first night after the fires. [Angst, rough sex, and Gorn.]
Notes: One of my all-time absolute favorite lines ever appears in this fic (“distracting, the way beautiful things tend to be when they’re broken”), and eonism’s Jim is the pinnacle of his characterization for me.

I LEFT THE SHIP AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY DOCTOR by camesawconquerd (crack!, PG-13)
Summary: Jim and Bones are two boneheaded teenagers (at heart) who can’t quite get their act together for long enough to get together. Enter their scheming crew mates, a lot of humor, a Spring Fling and mayhem reigns supreme. So will they make it work in the end? Yes WHO KNOWS?!
Notes: Hilarious romcom mash-up!

I’m Just a Jealous Guy by londondrowning (PG-13)
Summary: After an incident investigating a research vessel, the crew of the Enterprise find themselves in a different place and Kirk realizes he may have to follow the rules of this odd, almost fairy-tale world to get them home.

JIM CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER? by winterover (crack!, PG-13)
Summary: James T. Kirk gets a little brain-fried.
Notes: Complete and utter amazing crack.

A Kind of Magic by selinamoonfire (Beauty and the Beast AU, PG-13)
Summary: Leonard McCoy never believed in magic until that belief was forced upon him. When Jim Kirk beamed down to Rosa, he never expected to find himself in the middle of a fairy tale.

A Pirate’s Life for Me by rubynye (space pirate AU, PG-13)
Summary: Thirty-two standard days ago, the Lenore was raided by Captain Kirk of the rogue ship Iowa and her efficient crew. Not that McCoy noticed their lack of murderousness at the time.

On Fire by cards_slash (R)
Summary: Prompt: Sex changes everything. Title from the quote “Love is friendship set on fire.”

Pipe Dreams by waketosleep (R)
Summary: Starship captains shouldn’t be so fragile.
Notes: Disturbing, but great. Warning for character death. Labeled gen, but features McCoy and Kirk.

Postal Service by soloproject (suburbia AU, R)
Summary: Bones is a vet and he is most certainly not ogling the mailman.
Notes: And there’s a sequel!

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, in Soviet Russia, Romance Writes You by thalialunacy (crack!, R)
Summary: Bones is being courted by a high ranking female from one of the alien humanoid races they encounter; Jim gets jealous and takes up the challenge to try and win Bones himself. [Teaser: The heart is a tricky thing. Add in friendship and libido, a crew full of well-meaning but haphazard and somewhat socially-awkward people, cram them all into a starship for three years and shake— Well, then it’s downright un-navigable. Dedication: To Chris Pine and his endearingly dorky rom-coms.]

Réveillon by canistakahari (PG-13)
Summary: Bones used to love Christmas. Jim tries to help him get back into the spirit again.

The Devil Went Up to New York by AndreaLyn (R)
Summary: Jim Kirk was supposed to hit it big. Instead, he’s starting work as a bartender in a decidedly odd establishment. [Boils down to this: Jim + Bones + Coyote Ugly = This Fic.]

The One-Eyed Man Is King by acetonitrile (R?)
Summary: Hurt/comfort AU in which McCoy’s blind.
Notes: I like the first two parts best.

The Ringmaster by sangue (circus AU, NC-17)
Summary: AU set sometime in the 19C before medical hygiene and dermal regenerators, McCoy, the circus hobo clown is summoned by ringmaster, Kirk, who needs some medical attention.
Notes: Yes, you read that right. Circus AU. It’s gritty and atmospheric and you will not be sorry.

The Sum of Us by dala (PG-13)
Summary: A series of vignettes tracing the evolution of Kirk and McCoy’s relationship over the years. Or, five people are let in on the worst-kept secret in the Federation.

Then, Suddenly, Life Changed by salvaged_pride and sullacat (AU, R)
Summary: What if Leonard McCoy had been at the bar that night? Two men, a cycle, and a trip that changes their lives.

Things of or Pertaining to Counterpoint by eudaimon (R)
Summary: At some point, things changed between them and they’d kept tumbling into bed drunk but then they’d started staying and, somehow, it’s been two years and the Enterprise is in totally uncharted territory in more ways than one.
Notes: Short’n’sweet

Twice Shy by sarkasticfics (werewolf AU, NC-17)
Summary: Written for the prompt “Bones is a werewolf. The moment he meant James Kirk, got a good whiff of his scent, he knew he was fucked. He had thought those stories about werewolves scenting their mate were all bullshit. But the stories about mating for life have got to be fake, right? Right?

Wonderland by canistakahari (space pirate AU, R)
Summary: Jim and Spock need a Federation doctor, so they kidnap a man called Leonard McCoy.
Notes: Okay so maybe I have a thing for space pirates, but seriously. This is brilliant.

Arena (the Walk without Rhythm Remix) by betweenthebliss (PG-13)
Summary: After a Federation colony is attacked, the Enterprise pursues an alien ship into uncharted space. There they meet with a race of beings who kidnap Captain Kirk and force him to fight the alien captain in a battle to the death, while Spock must lead the Enterprise crew in a race against the clock to save him.

Breaking Points by ragdoll (R)
Summary: When the Enterprise is asked to transport Vulcan colonists to their new home, Spock Prime comes with them. His presence changes everything – and leads to life-altering revelations for Jim and Spock. A story about growth, self-discovery, and new beginnings.
Notes: Every reboot trope ever (mind meld, matchmaker!Spock Prime, jealous!Spock, broken!Jim), by which I mean glorious.

Degrees of Separation by betweenthebliss (R)
Summary: While villainz are torturing both of them (or right after), Spock manages to mind meld with Kirk in an attempt to help him control the pain; dauntingly protective and angry “I’m going to kill them for doing this to you” stuff gets through and then they probably do kill the motherfuckers after all because they’ve just figured out they need to make it out alive so they can have lots and lots of sex.

Eliminate the Impossible by barrowjane (ST:XI/Sherlock Holmes fusion)
Summary: “Do I want to know why you’re arrested, Jim, or would it spoil the surprise?”

Everything You Had and What Was Left After That by re white (NC-17)
Summary: Jim learns fast that very few people get off on having a partner who can’t.
Notes: For prompt “due to psychological trauma, Jim is unable to orgasm.” A little srsbzns h/c, but nothing too owie.

Four Things Jim Kirk Hates About That Pointy-Eared Bastard (and one thing he doesn’t. maybe.) by irrelevant (PG)
Summary: A lot of crew with a whiff of K/S. The title says it all: this is pure brain candy.
Notes: An away mission to Orion goes awry. Imagine that.

Half-Awake in a Fake Empire by chidol (PG-15)
Summary: The exit signs had always had the power to make him feel safe.

How High the Moon by kyliselle (NC-17)
Summary: After the destruction of Vulcan, Spock shielded his mind to protect it from his broken bond with T’Pring. Little did he know another bond had already formed in its place.
Notes: Accidental bonding, which creates soaringly epic ANGST. Squick warning for some spanking.

Indistinguishable from Magic by barrowjane (R)
Summary: After an incident investigating a research vessel, the crew of the Enterprise find themselves in a different place and Kirk realizes he may have to follow the rules of this odd, almost fairy-tale world to get them home.
Notes: One of the best fics I’ve ever read + remarkable soundtrack.

Jim Kirk and the Test of Thirty Days by the_arc5 (NC-17)
Summary: Jim is subjected to a sadistic test. Spock is very confused. Bones keeps getting interrupted. This is what true love is all about.

Keep Your Distance by masterofmidgets (PG-13)
Summary: In which Jim is lonely (and bored), Spock goes above and beyond the call of duty, and McCoy is going to have a heart attack before he’s forty. (Anti-sex pollen makes it so Kirk and Spock can’t be around each other.)

My Boy Builds Coffins by waldorph (PG-13)
Summary: Jim Kirk was a legend before he was even an hour old, and legends are never men. They are tragedies and heroes and cautionary tales and they never grow up or grow old, they simply are. Jim Kirk is a pain in Spock’s ass.
Notes: This fic is fierce, and the revelatory turn haunts me.

L/A/S by rageprufrock
Summary: Spock has to go undercover as a prostitute. Jim barely hangs on to his sanity. Mascara and mom sweaters make an appearance.
Notes: Lost to WIP wasteland, and you have to sift through her journal to find the subsequent updates, but the existing four parts are really, really funny.

A Long Time Ago We Used to Be Friends by irnan (PG-13)
Summary: Four ways in which Jim Kirk’s day really sucked, one in which it was downright weird, and one in which it was actually kinda really OK.

Love Is Strange by garryowen (NC-17)
Summary: Spock accompanies his parents to an Earth resort where Jim Kirk is a dancer.
Notes: A Dirty Dancing remix. Yes, for real.

Love Story by waldorph (teenage AU, R)
Summary: You were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles and my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet” and I was crying on a staircase, begging you, “Please don’t go.”
Notes: Kinda crack but definitely a completely sappy teenage angst and amazingness. Also Kirk is a fairytale princess. Sort of.

Only Good for Legends by leupagus (detective AU, NC-17)
Summary: Detective Spock, born on Vulcan and resident of San Francisco, is assigned to the Midwest police bureau. I think everyone can guess what happens next.
Notes: Flippin’ fantastic.

Repeat Offender by seperis (NC-17)
Summary: After a bar, in Iowa.
Notes: Jim returns to Iowa. Spock comes too. Sweet-Jesus-good first (well, second) kiss.

Secret Vulcan Mating Rituals by Chase820 (NC-17)
Summary: Everyone knows the story of how James T. Kirk beat the Kobayashi Maru. But only Kirk, Spock, and McCoy know the real story.
Notes: So much more than the summary claims. Hot sex. Vulcan mythology. Huge worldbuilding. Acceptable het. Sadly lost to WIP wasteland, but worth all 53 chapters.

So Wise We Grow by captanddeastar (R)
Summary: “Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”
Notes: Kid!fic to end all kid!fic. Break-your-heart good.

So You [Verbed] a [Noun] by leupagus and others
Notes: This isn’t technically a fic. Instead it’s a [conversation about a] series of proposed Starfleet educational pamphlets such as “So You Have Andorian Space Clap.” And it’s too funny to exist. Make sure to read the expansion of “So You Accidentally Got Married” under Misc below.

Some Victory by waldorph (rock band AU, NC-17)
Summary: He had been playing music like this for four years, and that was the first time he ever felt it, down to his bones (or, the one where they’re musicians and Jim and Spock still kind of hate each other).
Notes: Kinda dirty, very funny.

Southern Comfort by dala (academy-era AU, NC-17)
Summary: McCoy’s had a long day. Jim is just surprised they’re not drunk.

Strange Fits of Passion I Have Know by waketosleep (PG-13)
Summary: Kirk nearly turns a simple trade mission into a diplomatic incident. Luckily, Spock will do a lot to cover his captain’s ass. aka Aliens Made Them Do It (Or Did They?)!

Take Refuge in What You Know by corpus_invictus (AU, NC-17)
Summary: Kirk has moved into a apartment and wants to get to know his neighbors. He meets his neighbor Spock, a loner who suffers from extreme agoraphobia. Kirk thinks he’s beautiful enigma.
Notes: I lived and died by this fic as it was being written. Lovely angst along h/c lines. Light warnings for anxiety/mental health issues.

Taking the Slower Path (We’ll Get There in the End) by black_eyedgirl (pre-slash, PG-13)
Summary: They’re not friends yet. That takes time, more than a few really disastrous missions, two anniversaries, and quite a lot of bloodshed. Jim’s never been the patient type.
Notes: Really just the only way it could’ve happened. Headcanon accepted.

The Cleverness of Me by screamlet (NC-17)
Summary: In which Kirk lives out a space romcom. [Written for prompt: Kirk being oblivious. I want the whole crew to know that Spock loves him . . . and for Spock to be at his wit’s end. Something about sexually-frustrated!Spock appeals to me. Bonus if Kirk is fucking everything with legs in the meantime. Well, I got the oblivious part down.]

The Genetic Soap Opera (or, One of the Less Dignified Royal Weddings) by waketosleep (R)
Summary: Turns out Jim Kirk’s more than meets the eye, genetically speaking. There are a lot of consequences, mostly for Spock and his sanity.

The History of Wonderboy and Young Nasty Man by hollycomb (Halloween and teenage AU, PG-13)
Summary: Jim and company are high school freshman who run amok on Halloween night. When something truly scary happens, Jim rallies the gang to action.
Notes: Also features Sulu/Chekov! ADORABLE

Tuition by avidita (NC-17)
Summary: Groundhog’s Day fic— At 0500, Kirk is awakened by an attack on the Enterprise by an alien vessel. At 2100, Kirk falls into bed with McCoy for the first time while McCoy is strung out on alien sex pollen. At 0500, Kirk is awakened by the same attack on the Enterprise.

Verbal Jump-Rope by ragdoll (PG-13)
Summary: At the end of the movie, the older Spock did not seek out his younger self and encourage him to stay on the Enterprise. It falls to Jim to convince him. This is how he does it.

When It Is With Your Body by aedolon (R)
Summary: Kirk thinks Spock talking dirty would be just hilarious, only it turns out that it’s actually quite hot, in that blunt and grammatically correct way.
Notes: It’s possible I have a dirty talk kink. This works.

You Used to Be Able to Fall Off the Edge of the World, Here by justalittlebit (R)
Summary: Jim and Spock save the whales, Sulu’s life is ruined and Pavel makes the coffee.
Notes: Save the whales!AU with reboot!personalities, marine biology, slow-building romance, and deliriously hot sex. You actually can’t ask for more.

All the Single Vulcans by anonymous (gen, PG)
Summary: Prompt: Uhura and Spock get into a huge fight. Jim, McCoy, and guys go over to Spock’s for support. Naturally this devolves into a drinking session and someone breaks out 21st century pop music. Cut to Uhura coming to Spock’s room to apologize a couple hours later and walks in on the men dancing around to “Single Ladies.” Bonus if they’re doing some sort of semi-choreographed dance routine. Bonus if Jim and/or McCoy knows all the lyrics.

And the Devil Makes Three by cupiscent (Kirk/Spock/McCoy, PWP)
Summary: Strip chess is a dangerous game, even if Jim Kirk isn’t technically playing. (aka Green-blooded hobgoblins need love too, or maybe they need lessons in sexual deviance from a captain who really cares about developing his officers’ characters, but Dr McCoy really didn’t need any of this. Really.)

Convergence by mijan (Pike, Kirk, McCoy; PG-13)
Summary: Christopher Pike wasn’t supposed to be in Iowa, but there he was, weighing his future against scales that would never balance. Jim Kirk had given up on his future long ago. Leonard McCoy’s past had been pulled out from underneath him, and he was ready to let his future go with it. Paths converge in the least likely places as three people realize that their futures are what they make of them.

Hard to Find by spikeface (mirror!verse crossover; Kirk/McCoy, Reaper/Kirk, Reaper/McCoy, Spock/Reaper; NC-17)
Summary: Two hundred years after he finds C24, Reaper is still searching. (Not a Reaper!Bones story – why have one Karl character when you can have two?)

I Bring the Fire by vaingirl (Kirk/Spock/Uhura, NC-17)
Summary: Pon Farr, the original fuck or die alien biology scenario. Good times! (Warnings: There’s something inherently dub-con about fuck or die scenarios, right?)
Notes: There really is no appropriate summary. Dirty hot sex.

It’s the Grammar of Skin (peel it back, let me in) by vaingirl (Kirk/Spock/Uhura, NC-17)
Summary: In the tense aftermath of the Narada, Spock and Uhura break things off. Kirk may possibly object to this a little (or a lot). Then there’s the standard away mission of doom that changes everything.
Notes: Aliens made them do it.

So You Accidentally Got Married by dontneedaclassroom
Summary: Don’t panic! It can happen to anyone.
Notes: An expanded follow-up to “So You [Verbed] a [Noun].” You will laugh so hard you will snort.

The Hounds of Morrigan by (Uhura/Kirk/Spock, so NC-17 it isn’t funny)
Summary: An alternate world without a federation. Nyota Uhura is a scary BAMF with an even more terrifying matched set of hunting hounds on her leash. [Warnings: Slavery, non-con, d/s without the safeguards. Fucked up, dirty bad wrong shit.]
